We live in a world full of surprises that affect our life for the better or the worse. Unfortunately, for a woman in Romania to find out she is pregnant is usually not good news. That is why we have one of the highest abortion rates in Europe. It is currently stated that the main cause for such a dramatic abortion rate is the bad economic situation of the country, which renders women unable to raise a child. However, given the many side effects it produces and the resources at hand, abortion cannot be a proper solution for an unwanted pregnancy. Abortion produces deep wounds in the woman's soul and attacks her fundamental role, that of being a mother and bringing new human life into our world.
Despite the silence maintained over this issue, abortion has both physical and psychological consequences. Physical effects include bleeding, infections, perforation of the uterus, menstrual disturbances, rhesus isoimmunization in case of a negative Rh, etc. Further complications include premature births, ectopic pregnancies, or even sterility, underdevelopment of the fetus in the next pregnancy, laceration of the cervix (causing miscarriage in the next pregnancy), excessive bleeding in the first three months of pregnancy, placenta previa and higher rates of breast cancer later in life. Women who have had abortions often complain of suffering psychological and behavioral disturbances, called 'the post-abortion syndrome', which include anxiety, avoidance of emotional attachment, relationship problems, sleep disturbances, hostile outbursts, suicidal thoughts or actions, depression and substance abuse. These symptoms appear as a result of realizing the nature of their loss. It is one thing to lose possessions, money, or even a job, but quite another thing to lose a child. Unfortunately many women realize this only after the abortion.
From the social point of view, the huge abortion rate results in a dramatic decrease in birth rate and consequently the aging and decrease of the population, which is a serious reason for concern, even for the state authorities.
